Staying Positive As We Age

sunlight casting on evergreen trees

As we get older, it’s no secret that we’ll begin to notice changes in our bodies. You might hear your father groaning about his joints never being the same after he hit the big 60 mark, or your older neighbour finding it more and more difficult to manage the gardening in the backyard. Thankfully, you really can age gracefully, but there are healthy tips to follow to ensure that old age treats you well and you stay positive in the process.

First off, it’s important to make healthy choices. Now, you know the obvious; eat right, exercise, don’t smoke, but making healthy life choices includes taking care of your mental health. Stress has a huge impact on your well-being, whether you realize it or not. Your mental health is extremely important as you age, and studies are even showing that anxiety and depression are correlated to a physical decline in the elderly. It may be difficult to stay positive during a time when people close to you are passing away or when you’re dealing with loneliness and your own health in the mix, but it is possible. Here are a few tips to help you through these difficult times:

1. Gratitude

Gratitude can allow you to see the silver lining in any situation. Try to list three things you are grateful for every day and focusing on what you have, rather than what you don’t. You’ll be surprised at how much you have to be grateful for.

2. Support

Express yourself and your feelings to your main supporters, or write in a journal to express yourself on paper. Everyone needs a place to express themselves.

3. Humour

Humour can really help us get through those difficult times in life, and it’s important to keep this spirit going through tough situations.

4. Letting Go

Sometimes it’s important to let go what we can’t control in life and leave it up to a power greater than yourself. Letting go can be hard, but it takes the pressure off of living.

These are only a few tips that will help you stay positive and stay yourself through the process of aging. It can be a challenge, but there are so many rewarding parts of life in this chapter that will make you feel truly grateful.
